Delhi 6 – A Refreshing Taste of the Real World

~Reetu Bajaj ’12

Starring Abhishek Bachan, Sonam Kapoor, Waheeda Rehman, Om Puri, Atul Kulkarni, and Divya Dutta, and directed by the same brilliant man who gave you ‘Rang De Basanti’, ‘Delhi 6’ has been reviewed to be not your average Bollywood love story. Taken place in the crowded streets of Chandni Chowk , New Delhi, Roshan (Abhishek) is of Indian descent but living in the modern world of America. Roshan ends up taking his ailing grandmother back to India where she wishes to spend her last days. While she spends her days at home, retying past bonds, Roshan seems to be caught up in his own world with a bubbly yet confused Delhi girl (Sonam). Not only is his love life challenged, but issues such as the caste system, untouchability, and Hindu-Muslim tensions weave into his story. He tries falling in love with the breathless scenes of Delhi but upon witnessing riots and violence throughout the streets, Roshan would like nothing more than to leave. But then again, audiences do not really know much about this guy. Where did he live in America? Did he leave behind a past love or currently in a relationship? Find out for yourself in this Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra directed film which has been noted to be funny, beautiful to look at and to listen to (music director A.R. Rahman), and morally and philosophically strong, bringing up religious issues and yet really going for it.

Lucky By Chance – Lucky For All

~ Radha Venkatraman’12

Daughter of the great Lyricist and sister to the new hero on the block Farhan Akhtar, Zoya Aktar the director of this production has won the hearts of all. The movie not only has an amazing star cast comprising of legends like the great Rishi Kapoor and Juhi Chawla, but also has the current heart throb of the nation Hritik Roshan doing a guest appearance. The story is based on the lives of two individuals who want to make it big in bollywood. These two are Indian Cinemas Konkana Sen Sharma; (Sona Mishra) who is known for her powerful performances and Bollywood’s very own Director turned Actor, Farhan Akhtar (Vikram Jaisingh). Vikram is a struggling theatre actor who comes from Delhi to Bombay to make a place for himself in Bollywood. Sona is already part of the industry but has still not made it big and is struggling. The two meet and understand each other and while helping one another fall in love. Unfortunately Luck favors only one of the two. The way their lives change once Luck enters it and the effect it has on their relationship is the essence of this story. The climax of this movie is what distinguishes it from others and makes it stand out. The star cast has done justice to this movie, but the show has been stolen by Konkana who has given an outstanding performance and is looking beautiful. Debutant Zoya Akhtar has to be given credit for presenting an intelligent film that appeals to all. A must watch Luck by Chance has proved to be lucky for all involved.
