Monsoon Wedding – The Most Awaited Wedding

~ Radha Venkatraman ’12

Directed by Mira Nair, this movie appealed not only to the Indian masses but ended by being one of the most interesting movies the Diaspora has seen till date. Set in the heart of New Delhi in India, the movie talks about the Vermas, a traditional Punjabi family who are getting their daughter Aditi (Vasundhara Das) married to Hemant (Parvin Dabbas) an engineer from Huston in the U.S. The wedding brings the entire family together, but also brings up issues that were never to be spoken about. Lillet Dubey and Naseeruddin Shah play the parents of Aditi and Shefali Shetty plays Ria, her older unmarried cousin. Vijay Raaz plays the role of Dubey the wedding planner and gives comedy a completely new definition. The item number ‘Chunari Chunari’ is performed by Neha Dubey for the Sangeet which adds a touch of Bollywood to the movie while keeping its individuality intact. Special mention has to be made of the characters of Aliya and Varun the two younger siblings who have given very realistic performances. A hard hitting yet Masala entertainer, Monsoon Weddding brings Nair back into the limelight and presents the Diaspora with the changing image of modern India.
