Kidnap Fails to Capture Audience

Kidnap’ Fails to Capture Audience

~ Reetu Bajaj ‘12

‘Kidnap’ promos brought up much hype for several reasons. New kid on the block Imraan Khan is back after having quite a success with ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’. Audiences wondered if this lover-boy could build up to a fierce criminal. Minissha  Lamba comes back from her simple character in Bachna Ae Haseeno to a more sleek and sexy look. And since Sunjay Dutt had been recently absent from many movies, audiences were excited to see him back in action. Lastly, and most importantly, ‘Kidnap’ is directed by Sanjay Gadhvi, who was the man behind the success of the famous Dhoom 1 and 2. Having these teasers, does the movie meet its expectations?

The story is as goes: Vikranth Raina (Sanjay Dutt) is one of the richest men in the world. His relationship with his wife is filled with tension and conflict which leads him to living abroad separately. Missing her father and arguing constantly with her mother, Sonia (Minissha Lamba) is stuck in a common childhood disposition. On Christmas, Sonia is kidnapped by Kabir (Imraan Khan). Kabir’s motive is only to avenge an offense Vikranth committed that cost our hero his childhood. Through a series of intense moments and a sultry song sequence, the movie ends up being more like a run and chase story. Does Vikranth successfully follow up on Kabir’s clues to Sonia or does his mistakes ultimately lead towards the death of his own daughter? If you’re really ambitious, watch it on screens. But being a typical and predictable thriller, I’m sure you can guess the ending for yourself.

Overall, there is quite a good cast, and one or two good songs. But screenplay, script, and story line are very weak. It has chances of running for a few weeks because of Imraan Khan, who is definitely an up and coming star. Nonetheless, ‘Kidnap’ is not bound to steal your attention.
